Catedral del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

The cathedral of the Diocese of Limón is a striking modern building that replaced the older church destroyed by the 22 April 1991 earthquake — the same magnitude 7.7 quake that lifted sections of the Caribbean coast a metre out of the sea. The new cathedral, completed in the 1990s, is sharply geometric, with a tall slatted bell tower and an interior that is cool, plain, and unusually light for the tropics.

It sits a block inland from Parque Vargas, on the western edge of the town centre, and is worth a quick look as much for the contrast with the surrounding low wooden buildings as for the architecture itself. Mass times are posted on the door.
