Sportfishing

Flamingo Marina is the hub of one of Costa Rica's most active sportfishing operations. The marina sits between Flamingo and Playa Potrero and operates full-service facilities for private boats and charter vessels. Offshore fishing targets sailfish and marlin — the season peaks from November to April for sailfish, though the fishing is productive year-round — and dorado (mahi-mahi) and yellowfin tuna are common offshore catches as well. Inshore charters go after roosterfish, snapper, and jack crevalle in the shallower water closer to the coast.

Full-day and half-day charters are available through the marina and several operators in town. Most include tackle and bait; some are catch-and-release only, a practice increasingly common on the Guanacaste coast. Prices are higher than at smaller fishing villages but the boats and equipment are generally well-maintained.

A story
Flamingo has hosted international sportfishing tournaments for decades, and the marina's position — with quick access to both inshore flats and the offshore Pacific trench — is the reason. Offshore, the depth drops sharply, putting blue marlin, black marlin, and sailfish within reach of a morning charter. Several world-record catches have been made in these waters, and the fishing culture permeates the town in a way that the resort development hasn't displaced.
