Isla Chora Wildlife Refuge

A small rocky island about 3 km south of Samara that is a designated wildlife refuge and one of the better snorkelling spots on the southern Nicoya coast. The reef around the island shelters significant fish populations, and the waters are clear enough on calm days to see coral formations without diving equipment.

Boats from the main beach at Samara run trips to the island — the journey takes about 20 minutes. Frigate birds and pelicans are commonly seen, and the island itself has nesting seabirds. You can also kayak here on calm days, though the open water between the cove and the island is exposed when the wind picks up. The refuge is managed by the national system of protected areas.
