Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary

Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary lies near Quizarrá, southeast of San Isidro, on the former farm of naturalist Alexander Skutch. The reserve protects premontane forest, gardens, and trails where birdlife is the main event.

It is a quiet, specialist place rather than a mass-market attraction. Birders will get the most from it, but even casual visitors can appreciate the slower rhythm, the old house, and the sense that this patch of forest has been watched carefully for decades.

A story
Los Cusingos was the home and outdoor laboratory of Alexander Skutch, the naturalist whose patient studies shaped modern understanding of many Neotropical birds. The reserve's name comes from the local Spanish name for the fiery-billed aracari.
