Santa Cruz itself is more of a base than a destination, but the surrounding area has plenty to offer. The Pacific beaches are the main draw — surfing, swimming, and wildlife watching along a stretch of coast that includes several blue-flag award beaches. Turtle nesting sites and monkey habitat are protected by active community conservation projects. In town, a handful of artists' studios welcome visitors, and shops sell local artwork in wood, fabric, and fused glass.
