Playa

Westernmost municipality of Havana, containing Miramar and the beaches of the western coast

Playa is the westernmost municipality of Havana, encompassing Miramar and the beach neighbourhoods along the northern coast. While Havana's city beaches are modest compared to Varadero or the eastern beaches, the stretch at Playa (also known as Santa Fe further west) offers sand and swimming within reach of the city. Cubans come here on weekends, arriving by bicycle and shared taxi.

The area also contains Fusterlandia — the extraordinary neighbourhood-scale art installation created by artist José Fuster, who has been covering his house, studio, and the surrounding buildings in colourful ceramic murals for decades. It is one of the most unusual sights in Havana and entirely free to walk through.
