Viñales Valley Viewpoint (Los Jazmines)

The classic panoramic view of the valley from the terrace of the Hotel Los Jazmines

The standard panoramic view of the Viñales valley is taken from the terrace of the Hotel Los Jazmines, about 3 km north of the village on the road in from Pinar del Río. The hotel itself is unremarkable, but the terrace gives a sweeping view across the entire valley floor — tobacco fields, royal palms, and a sequence of mogotes rising from the flat red earth in the afternoon light.

It is the most photogenic spot in the valley and almost always has a few visitors. You don't need to stay at the hotel or pay an admission — walk up to the terrace and order a mojito if you want to linger. The view is best in the late afternoon when the light falls at a low angle across the mogotes.

A story
The view from the Los Jazmines terrace is the most-photographed image of Cuba after classic cars in Havana and the Capitol building. It appeared in every edition of the Lonely Planet Cuba guide for two decades. The irony is that the terrace belongs to a state hotel of no particular distinction — the view is the entire reason to go.
