Things to Do

Luperon is not a resort town. There are no water parks, no all-inclusive buffets, and no animation staff. What it has is a deep, sheltered harbour that sailors consider one of the safest hurricane holes in the Caribbean, a beautiful beach nearby, and an easy pace of life that rewards slow travel.

The harbour is the social centre. Long-term cruisers anchor here for weeks or months — the marina community is its own small world — and local fishermen work the docks in the early mornings. The Malecón at dusk is when the town comes alive, with locals gathering to watch the sun set over the bay.

Nearby, the ruins of La Isabela — Christopher Columbus's first permanent settlement in the Americas — are one of the most historically significant sites in the entire Caribbean, and they draw surprisingly few visitors.
