Encuentro Beach, about 3 kilometres west of Cabarete, is the best surf spot on the north coast — a consistent reef break that works with the same trade winds that drive kiting conditions further east. Several distinct peaks break over the reef: the inside section has mellow, long waves suitable for beginners, while the outside offers faster, hollower rides for more experienced surfers.
Surf schools operate from the beach and rent boards by the hour. Even on days when the surf is flat, the beach is appealing — wider and less built-up than Cabarete itself, with a couple of simple beach bars and fewer people. It's also a legitimate kiteboarding spot on bigger wind days.
