Getting There

The peninsula has its own airport, El Catey International (AZS), about 50 kilometres west of Samaná town. Direct flights run from a few European hubs in winter and from several US cities; otherwise, most international visitors fly to Santo Domingo or Punta Cana and connect by road.

The Autopista del Nordeste cuts the drive from Santo Domingo to around two and a half hours — fast, modern, and toll. From Puerto Plata or the north coast the drive is slower but more scenic, around three and a half hours through small towns and rolling hills. Long-distance buses (Caribe Tours, Metro) run from Santo Domingo daily and are comfortable and cheap. A daily ferry crosses the bay from Sabana de la Mar in about an hour, useful for connecting from points east.
