Samaná is a base, not a destination in itself — most of what makes the peninsula worth visiting lies on its edges. The town has a pleasant waterfront and a couple of historic curiosities, but the real itinerary is the whales in season, the offshore islands, the waterfalls inland, and the headline beach at Playa Rincón.
