About 30 kilometres east of Samaná, the road ends at Las Galeras — a small fishing village that has slowly become an alternative base for travellers who want the peninsula's beaches without the crowds of Las Terrenas. A handful of guesthouses, a few restaurants, and a tropical lethargy that the bigger resort towns have lost.
The village beach is pleasant but not the headline. A short walk or boat ride away are the much better Playa Madama, Playa Frontón, and Playa Rincón — three of the best beaches on the Atlantic side of the country. Las Galeras is also the closest base for Playa Rincón if you don't want to take a boat from Samaná town.
