The Memorial Museum of Dominican Resistance is a small but affecting museum in the Zona Colonial dedicated to documenting resistance against the Trujillo dictatorship (1930–1961). The exhibits cover the methods of repression — secret police, informers, torture, disappearances — and the individuals and groups who resisted, many of whom were killed for doing so.
The museum is honest about the brutality of the Trujillo era and does not soften the history. It is an important counterpart to the colonial sites around it, reminding visitors that the most recent chapter of Dominican history is as significant as the most ancient. The display on the Mirabal Sisters — who were assassinated by Trujillo's agents in 1960 and are now a symbol of resistance throughout Latin America — is particularly powerful.
