Santo Domingo has a metro system — two lines, clean, air-conditioned, and cheap — but its coverage is limited to a north–south corridor and an east–west corridor that do not reach the Zona Colonial or the airport. It is useful for getting from the bus terminals to the central area and is the best option if your route happens to match a line.
Taxis are the most practical way to get around. Official yellow taxis are everywhere but do not use meters — agree on the fare before you get in. Fares within central Santo Domingo run RD$150–300. Uber operates and often works out cheaper and less confrontational than street taxis; it is widely used by locals and visitors alike.
Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are the cheapest and fastest option for short distances, but they are not recommended for tourists unfamiliar with Dominican traffic. Públicos (shared minibuses) cover fixed routes cheaply but are difficult to navigate without local knowledge.
Walking is feasible in the Zona Colonial, Gazcue, and Piantini, but not between them — the distances are long and the roads hostile to pedestrians.
