Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal

The Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal is the main baseball stadium in Santo Domingo, seating around 18,000 people. The Dominican winter league season runs from October through January, and a game here is one of the most authentic experiences you can have in the city — the atmosphere is loud, passionate, and utterly at odds with the air-conditioned calm of most tourist attractions.

Tickets are inexpensive and sold at the gate. The stadium is named after Juan Marichal, a Hall of Fame pitcher from the Dominican Republic who played for the San Francisco Giants in the 1960s. Bring cash for snacks — fried food, cold beer, and the local energy drink Presidente are sold throughout the stands.

A story
Baseball in the Dominican Republic is not just a sport — it is the primary route out of poverty for young men from the countryside. The number of Dominican players in Major League Baseball is disproportionate to the island's size; every MLB team now has a training academy (bateyes) in the Dominican Republic, and scouts from the United States arrive before players are teenagers.
