The beaches around La Libertad are volcanic and dark, with strong surf rather than postcard-calm swimming. Check conditions before going in: rips are common, rocks sit just under the surface at several breaks, and the best beaches for surfers are not always the best beaches for casual swimmers.
El Tunco and El Sunzal are the easiest places to arrange lessons. El Zonte is quieter and more relaxed. Punta Roca is for experienced surfers who know how to handle a powerful point break.
