La Libertad is about 35 km southwest of San Salvador. Buses and minibuses run frequently from the capital toward the coast; traffic makes the trip anywhere from 45 minutes to well over an hour. Tourist shuttles also connect San Salvador, El Tunco, and the main surf beaches.
The coastal highway continues west to El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte, and the rest of the surf coast. Local buses are cheap and useful for short hops, but taxis or shuttles are easier after dark.
