The Ruta de las Flores is the most popular tourist circuit in El Salvador, and deservedly so. It follows a winding highland road through the coffee-growing mountain towns of the west — Nahuizalco, Salcoatitán, Juayúa, Apaneca, and Ataco — between Santa Ana and Ahuachapán. The weekends bring craft markets, food festivals, and the flower gardens that give the route its name; the towns are genuinely charming rather than manufactured, set in volcanic-soil coffee country at the edge of cloud forest.
Juayúa's gastronomic festival on Saturdays and Sundays is the most famous stop, and most towns offer craft workshops and coffee-farm visits. From Santa Ana, take the road south toward Ahuachapán and follow signs for the Ruta. A full day by car or day-tour gives the most flexibility, though local buses also connect the towns; weekend visits offer the most activity.
