Disko Bay, on the west coast of Greenland north of the Arctic Circle, is one of the most visited regions in the country and the base for most winter and summer tourism. The bay is dominated by the vast bulk of Disko Island to the northwest and fed by the Ilulissat Icefjord to the east — the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere.
The town of Ilulissat is the main hub: the third-largest city in Greenland and the best base for exploring the bay. From here you can take boat trips among icebergs, hike the UNESCO World Heritage icefjord trails, watch humpback and minke whales in summer, and go dog sledding across the sea ice in winter. The bay also supports the largest Arctic tern colony in Greenland, and the area is productive for birding throughout summer.
Disko Island itself is the largest island in Greenland outside the mainland, with hot springs, basalt cliffs, and the small town of Qeqertarsuaq. It receives far fewer visitors than Ilulissat and rewards those who make the effort.
Summer brings midnight sun and temperatures occasionally reaching 20°C — the warmest in Greenland. Winter means northern lights, stable sea ice, and dog sled travel. The bay is accessible year-round via Air Greenland flights to Ilulissat from Nuuk and Copenhagen.
