Dog Sledding

One of the few places left where dog teams are working transport

Qaanaaq is one of the last places in the Arctic where dog teams are not a tourist novelty but a basic working tool. Most of the hunters in town still keep teams of 8 to 14 Greenland dogs chained on the beach below the houses, and from October to June they are used on every hunting trip, every visit to a neighbouring settlement and every haul of meat from the floe edge.

It is possible to arrange a sled trip with a local hunter — short half-day rides around the bay, full-day trips across to one of the smaller villages, or longer expeditions of several days out toward the inland ice. The hunters' association in town will help with introductions, and the hotel can usually point you to the right people. Dress for serious cold and expect to walk alongside the sled on uphill stretches; this is working transport, not a sleigh ride.
