Qaqortoq Tannery

The Qaqortoq Tannery is one of the oldest commercial operations in southern Greenland and one of the few places in the world where you can watch traditional sealskin processing. The tannery processes furs and skins from local hunters, treating them using traditional methods to produce the kind of quality that has made Greenlandic sealskin internationally sought after. The end products — coats, boots, gloves, and hats — are available for sale at the tannery shop and are among the finest souvenirs available anywhere in Greenland.

Tours of the working tannery can be arranged through the tourist office, giving you a chance to see the full process from raw skin to finished garment. The work is skilled and the facility is genuinely impressive, operating at the intersection of Indigenous craft tradition and modern commercial production. If you're in the market for sealskin goods, buying directly here means both better prices and the knowledge that the item was made by people who have done this work for generations.

A story
The tannery is one of the few remaining traditional sealskin processors in Greenland still operating at commercial scale. Sealskin has been central to Greenlandic survival for thousands of years — providing waterproof clothing that no synthetic material has ever fully replicated for Arctic conditions. The tannery's products are exported worldwide, and the coats and boots it produces command premium prices in specialty stores in Europe and North America.
