Highlights

Grand Anse Beach is one of the finest stretches of sand in the Caribbean — two kilometres of white sand on the southwest coast, calm water, and within easy reach of St. George's. It gets busy with cruise ship passengers on port days but empties out pleasantly otherwise.

St. George's is worth more than a hurried look. The Carenage, the horseshoe inner harbour, is ringed with Georgian warehouses and small boats. Fort George on the headland above gives panoramic views over both the harbour and the open sea. The Market Square is best visited on Saturday morning when it fills with spice vendors, produce stalls, and considerable noise.

Grand Etang Forest Reserve sits in the mountainous interior at around 530 metres. The crater lake is the centrepiece, but the surrounding rainforest is excellent for birdwatching — look for the Grenada dove, found nowhere else on earth. The trail network is manageable without a guide, though hiring one helps with identification.

Concord Falls offers three tiers; the lower one is an easy walk, the upper (Au Coin) requires a solid hour of hiking through nutmeg groves and forest. Rewarding and rarely crowded.

Carib's Leap at Sauteurs on the north coast marks the site where the last Caribs on the island chose to jump from the cliffs in 1651 rather than surrender to the French. The cliffs themselves are dramatic, and the area around Sauteurs is quieter and less developed than the south.

River Antoine Rum Distillery near Grenville is the oldest working distillery in the Caribbean, operating since 1785 with machinery still driven by a waterwheel. Tours are informal and the rum is formidably strong.

The Bianca C wreck off the southwest coast is one of the best dive sites in the Caribbean. The 183-metre ship sank in 1961 and now lies at around 50 metres, partially accessible to recreational divers on the shallower upper structure.

Carriacou is a 45-minute flight or two-hour ferry ride north. It is quieter, flatter, and has better snorkelling and a genuine shipbuilding tradition at Windward village. Worth at least a night if your schedule allows.
