Le Zagaya

Le Zagaya is a Creole restaurant in Saint-François, with a terrace looking out toward the marina. The menu changes with the market and the catch: fresh fish and shellfish, prepared with local spices and the balance between French technique and Creole flavour that characterises the best cooking in Guadeloupe. Langoustines, lobster in season, and plantain cooked properly (not the sugary version aimed at tourists) are reliable choices.

Saint-François has several good restaurants, and Le Zagaya is among the more consistent. The pace is leisurely — this is not the place to eat quickly — and the rum list is well chosen. An evening here after a day at the beach or Pointe des Châteaux fits the rhythms of the south coast well.

A story
Zagaya is a Creole word for a type of traditional spear, and by extension a term used in Guadeloupe for something spirited and direct. It is a fitting name for a restaurant that takes its cooking seriously without pretension.
