Musée Schœlcher

Musée Schœlcher occupies a nineteenth-century building on Rue Peynier and is dedicated to Victor Schœlcher, the French abolitionist associated with the 1848 abolition of slavery in French colonies. The collection includes sculpture, objects, and material tied to slavery, emancipation, and republican memory.

It is a useful companion to Mémorial ACTe. Where Mémorial ACTe is broad, modern, and immersive, Musée Schœlcher is smaller and more historical, rooted in the way Guadeloupe has chosen to remember abolition through one complicated public figure.

A story
Victor Schœlcher is remembered in the French Caribbean as a leading abolitionist, but the museum is most interesting when it complicates hero worship. The objects here sit inside a society where abolition, citizenship, race, and colonial power did not resolve neatly in 1848.
