Place de la Victoire

Place de la Victoire is Pointe-à-Pitre's old civic centre, a broad square by the water with royal palms, colonial-era traces, and enough shade to make it useful as well as symbolic. It is the natural starting point for a walk through the city.

The square has been through fires, hurricanes, and political renamings, yet it still functions as a public room. From here you can drift toward the waterfront, the cathedral, the markets, or the museum streets without needing a plan more elaborate than curiosity and comfortable shoes.

A story
The square's name dates from 1794, when French Revolutionary forces under Victor Hugues retook Guadeloupe from the British. Its calm shade today sits on ground that has repeatedly been renamed, rebuilt, and repurposed with each political turn of the island.
