Practical Information

Currency: The euro (EUR). ATMs are widely available in Pointe-à-Pitre, Basse-Terre city, and the larger resort areas. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, but carry cash for markets, small restaurants, and the outer islands where card acceptance is less reliable.

Language: French is the official language. English is spoken at most tourist-facing businesses in resort areas, but less so elsewhere. Even a few words of French will be appreciated. Guadeloupean Creole is widely spoken among locals.

Health: No vaccinations are required for entry. The main health concern specific to Guadeloupe is schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection found in some freshwater rivers and lakes — avoid swimming in unmanaged freshwater. Tap water is generally safe to drink on Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre. Medical facilities are good by Caribbean standards; the main hospital is in Pointe-à-Pitre.

Safety: Guadeloupe is generally safe for tourists, but petty theft occurs at beaches and in Pointe-à-Pitre. Don't leave valuables in a parked car or unattended on the beach. The outer islands are very safe.

Electricity: 220V, 50Hz with European (Type E) two-pin plugs — the same as mainland France. US travelers will need an adapter and possibly a converter.

Time zone: UTC-4 (no daylight saving time).

Internet and phones: Mobile coverage is good on the main islands. French and EU SIM cards work seamlessly. The dialing code is +590. Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and many cafes, though speeds can be slower on the outer islands.

Emergency number: 15 (SAMU — medical), 17 (police), 18 (fire).
