Río de la Pasión Boat Trip

The most enjoyable way to reach Ceibal is by boat along the Río de la Pasión from the riverside town of Sayaxché. The journey takes about 30–45 minutes each way and passes through gallery forest with herons, kingfishers, and occasionally howler monkeys visible from the water. Tour operators in Flores arrange combined boat trips that include both the river journey and guided time at the site.

The river approach also connects Ceibal with Aguateca, another less-visited but significant Maya site about 37 km downstream. Aguateca was famously burned and abandoned abruptly around 810 AD — so quickly that the inhabitants left their belongings behind, creating an archaeological time capsule of Late Classic domestic life. Tour operators in Sayaxché can arrange combined visits to both sites in a single long day.

A story
The Río de la Pasión was one of the major trade arteries of the Classic Maya world, connecting the Petén heartland to the Gulf of Mexico. The river allowed the exchange of jade, obsidian, cacao, and feathers that fuelled the ceremonial economy of cities like Ceibal, Dos Pilas, and Aguateca — all of which sit along its banks or tributaries.
