Quetzaltenango Municipal Theatre is one of Xela's most elegant buildings, a neoclassical cultural landmark from the city's prosperous coffee-era years. Its facade and foyer carry the old civic confidence of Quetzaltenango, when the city saw itself as a serious rival to the capital.
If a performance is on, that is the best way to experience it; otherwise, it is still worth a look while walking the streets around Parque Centro América. The theatre helps explain why Xela feels more cultured and self-contained than many travellers expect from Guatemala's highland second city.
