Marché en Fer

Jacmel's iron market — built around the same period and from the same cast-iron kit-of-parts as the more famous Marché Hyppolite in Port-au-Prince — sits a couple of blocks north of the cathedral. It is smaller and less polished but very much working: produce, charcoal, second-hand clothes, livestock, and an aggressive crowd of vendors fill the streets around it on market days.

The market is busiest on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Go early, watch where you put your feet, and ask before you photograph anyone. The stalls along the outer edge sell candies and sweet snacks — including the Jacmel speciality of tablèt pistach, peanut brittle made with raw sugar.
