The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is the seat of the Diocese of Port-de-Paix, erected in 1861 as a suffragan of Cap-Haïtien. The building anchors the central square and the market spreads out around it on most days, which gives the cathedral steps the best people-watching in town.
It is a simple, twin-towered Caribbean church, painted white and pale yellow, weathered by salt air. Mass on Sunday morning is the social event of the week — worth catching for the singing alone.
