Río Cangrejal

The Río Cangrejal runs through the eastern edge of Pico Bonito National Park and is the best place in Honduras for white-water rafting. The river has sections ranging from calm floats suitable for families to technical Class IV rapids demanding real experience. Several operators in La Ceiba run half-day and full-day trips; pick up at your accommodation is usually included.

The river valley is also superb for hiking, with trails on both sides leading through tropical forest to waterfalls and swimming holes. A string of small lodges and eco-lodges has grown up along the river road, making this an excellent base for anyone wanting to spend more than a day in the area. Even if you don't raft, the drive up the valley is worth doing for the scenery alone.

A story
The Cangrejal is one of the few rivers in Central America with commercially run white-water rafting of international standard. Its Class III–IV rapids run through the heart of Pico Bonito National Park, past walls of jungle where you are genuinely in the wild — jaguars have been photographed on the riverbanks.
