Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge

The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge sits west of La Ceiba, where two rivers — the Cuero and the Salado — meet in a large complex of mangroves and lagoons before reaching the Caribbean. The refuge is one of Honduras's most important manatee sanctuaries, and boat trips into the channels offer a realistic chance of seeing West Indian manatees, howler monkeys, river otters, and a remarkable variety of waterbirds.

Getting there requires some effort: a short train journey on a narrow-gauge plantation railway runs from the roadhead at Las Vegas to the refuge entrance, which adds to the adventure. Tours can be arranged from La Ceiba — a half-day trip is manageable, a full day is better. The refuge is a compelling contrast to the mountain and river landscapes available in the other direction.
