Agua Caliente, some 12 km northwest of Ocotepeque, is the main crossing into Guatemala's Chiquimula department. From the Guatemalan side, the road runs through Chiquimula town and on to Esquipulas, home of the famous Black Christ pilgrimage church that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
This is a quieter crossing than El Poy, with less truck traffic and a more relaxed atmosphere. Buses to Esquipulas depart from the Guatemalan side regularly in the morning. From Ocotepeque, take a bus or taxi northwest along the road through the pine forests. Bring your passport and note that both countries have exit and entry fees. The crossing closes at sunset.
