El Poy Border Crossing

Honduras-El Salvador border crossing, 4 km south of Ocotepeque

The El Poy crossing, about 4 km south of Ocotepeque on the Carretera CA-4, connects Honduras with El Salvador's Chalatenango department. It is the main crossing point for travelers heading between the two countries on the western highland route, busier with local traffic and trucks than with tourists.

The crossing is straightforward and operates during daylight hours — aim to arrive by mid-afternoon. On the Salvadoran side, the road continues to Tejutla and eventually San Salvador. Colectivos and buses run between Ocotepeque's central market and the border throughout the day. Money changers work both sides; rates are fair for lempiras and dollars, less so for other currencies.
