Monumento Natural El Güisayote

Cloud forest reserve with trails and highland birdlife northwest of Ocotepeque

About 15 km northwest of town, El Güisayote is a cloud forest reserve covering the ridgeline that forms part of the Honduras-Guatemala border. The forest is dense with oaks, liquidambars, and tree ferns, and the elevation brings reliable cool temperatures and frequent mist. Quetzals have been recorded here, along with toucans and a range of cloud forest specialities.

The entrance is rough and requires local transport or a hired vehicle from Ocotepeque. The park has basic trails and no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring food, water, and good footwear. Arrange a guide in Ocotepeque if you want to push deeper into the reserve — the trails are unmarked and the forest thick. The main draw is the birdwatching in the early morning; by midday the mist often clears and the views across the mountains toward Guatemala open up.
