Estadio Excélsior is Puerto Cortés's main football ground, a roughly 8,500-capacity stadium on the northern edge of town. It is home to Platense Fútbol Club, the local side that has spent most of its history bouncing between Honduras's top division and the second tier. Match days bring out a tight, noisy local following and the stadium's open ends fill with the smell of grilled meat from the food carts that ring the entrances.
There is little to see here outside of a fixture, but if Platense are playing it is a cheap, atmospheric introduction to Honduran club football well away from the bigger crowds in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa.
