Playa de Omoa is a wide stretch of grey-brown volcanic sand running along the bay just below the village of Omoa. It is quieter than the more developed beaches further east toward Tela, and on weekdays you may have long stretches to yourself. The water is warm and shallow for a good way out, which makes it popular with Honduran families on weekends.
A row of simple seafront comedores lines the back of the beach. They grill whole fish, shrimp and conch over charcoal and serve them with rice, beans and patacones for a fraction of what you would pay in a resort. Combine the beach with the fortress a few hundred metres inland for a satisfying half-day from Puerto Cortés.
