Beneficio Maya

Coffee processing plant where you can see highland beans graded, roasted and buy export-quality coffee

Santa Rosa sits in the heart of Honduras's best coffee-growing region, and Beneficio Maya is the place to see what happens between the hillside and the cup. This processing plant in Barrio San Martin grades, sorts, and roasts beans from small farms across the western highlands.

Visitors can arrange a tour to see the wet and dry processing stages, learn how altitude and soil affect flavour profiles, and — most importantly — buy bags of fresh export-grade coffee at local prices. The highland beans from the Copan region are known for their bright acidity and chocolate notes, and buying here means getting coffee that was processed days ago rather than months. If you are serious about coffee, this visit pairs well with a trip to one of the surrounding fincas where the beans are actually grown.

A story
Founded in 1985 by the Dunaway family, Beneficio Maya started when the founders personally visited mountain villages to buy directly from growers. The company helped put Honduran specialty coffee on the international map, and the beans processed here end up in roasteries across North America and Europe.
