At 2,256 m, Blue Mountain Peak is the highest point in Jamaica and the tallest summit in the Caribbean outside Hispaniola. The standard approach is an overnight hike, departing the trailhead at Penlyne Castle or nearby Whitfield Hall around 2am to reach the summit by sunrise. On a clear morning you can see the coast of Cuba, 145 km to the north.
The trail climbs through montane forest dense with tree ferns, mosses, and bromeliads. The final push to the summit is steep, and temperatures near the top can drop sharply before dawn — bring warm layers, a good torch, and waterproofs. The hike is roughly 11 km return from Whitfield Hall, taking four to five hours up. Most hikers stay the night before at Whitfield Hall lodge, a basic but atmospheric old stone building.
