Denbigh Showground

Site of the country's biggest annual agricultural fair, every August

On the western edge of town, Denbigh's expansive showground hosts the Jamaica Agricultural Society's annual Denbigh Show on the Emancipation/Independence long weekend (1–6 August). It is the country's biggest farming festival — three days of livestock judging, food competitions, agro-processing demonstrations, marching bands and concerts. Tens of thousands attend.

Outside the show weekend the ground is quiet, but the surrounding area is interesting in its own right: the Jamaican School of Agriculture and the Glenmuir district extend the agricultural feel.

A story
The Denbigh Show, run every Emancipation/Independence weekend in early August, has been held since 1952 and is the showcase of Jamaican farming. The crowds come to see prize-winning bulls, the best yam at the giant-vegetable competition (a category that gets unusually fierce), and the marching bands and reggae acts of the evening programme.
