La Savane

Waterfront park with a headless statue of Empress Josephine

The central park of Fort-de-France, La Savane is a palm-shaded square fronting the waterfront. It is the social hub of the city — vendors sell cold drinks and coconuts along the edges, and benches fill up in the late afternoon. A headless statue of Empress Josephine, born in Martinique, stands in the park; locals decapitated it in 1991 as a protest against her support of slavery.
