Fort Saint-Louis

17th-century French fortification guarding Fort-de-France bay

The 17th-century French fortification that guards the entrance to the Bay of Fort-de-France. Built in 1638 and expanded over successive centuries, it remains an active French Navy base. Access is limited, but the exterior walls and cannon placements are visible from La Savane and the waterfront, and guided tours occasionally run on weekends.
