Columbus Landing Marker

A small marker on the waterfront pier at Le Carbet commemorates Columbus's landing here in 1502. This was the first confirmed European contact with Martinique — though the Carib people who were already living on the island had a less celebratory view of the occasion.

The marker is modest, easily missed if you are not looking for it, and the pier itself is a pleasant spot to sit in the early evening when the fishing boats come in. The dark volcanic sand beach in front of the town stretches south, and on clear days the outline of Saint Lucia is visible on the southern horizon.

A story
Columbus arrived here on 15 June 1502 during his fourth and final voyage to the Americas. He landed, took on water, and spent a few days on the island before continuing south. The Carib people who greeted him called the island Madinina, meaning "Island of Flowers." Columbus did not stay long enough to claim it for Spain, and Martinique remained uncolonised for another century until French settlers arrived in 1635.
