Things to Do

Le Carbet's main draws are concentrated along the waterfront and just north of town. The Musée Gauguin marks the painter's brief but significant stay in 1887. Just north of town, the Botanical Gardens at Anse Latouche occupy the ruins of a 17th-century sugar plantation with an impressive collection of tropical plants.

The Columbus Landing Marker on the pier commemorates the Spanish explorer's 1502 landing — the first European contact with Martinique. The Église Saint-Jacques, dating to 1645, is one of the oldest churches in the Caribbean. For more active visitors, the Carbet Waterfalls — three tiers of falls in the Carbet Mountains above the town — are accessible on foot.
