Saint-Pierre is about 25km north of Fort-de-France by road, following the west coast highway (N2). By car from the capital it takes roughly 40 minutes; by taxi it costs around €50–60. There is no direct air or sea connection to Saint-Pierre — all international arrivals come through Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport near Fort-de-France.
The most practical option for travellers without a car is the collective taxi (taxi collectif) service. These shared minibuses run between Fort-de-France's Pointe Simon waterfront terminal and Saint-Pierre throughout the day, stopping along the route; the fare is a few euros. They are the cheapest option but run on no fixed timetable — you wait until the vehicle fills. Services become sparse in the late afternoon and evening.
Renting a car in Fort-de-France is worth considering if you plan to explore the north of the island, visit Mont Pelée, or make your own way to Saint-Pierre at a chosen time. The drive up the west coast is scenic, passing Le Carbet and the site of Gauguin's time on the island. The coastal road is narrow in places but well-paved.
