Le Fromager

Le Fromager is one of Saint-Pierre's better-regarded restaurants, occupying a terrace position with views over the bay toward the ruins. It serves Creole cuisine — grilled langouste (spiny lobster), fish prepared in court-bouillon, accras, and the blaff (white fish poached in spiced broth with lime) that Martinique does particularly well. Portions are substantial and presentation is unpretentious.

The lunch service draws locals as well as visitors, which is usually a good sign. The restaurant takes its name from the fromager tree (a silk-cotton tree) that grows nearby — a common landmark in old Caribbean towns. Book ahead in high season or arrive early; there are not many tables and the better ones on the terrace fill fast.
