Ruins of the Military Hospital

The ruins of the old military hospital are among the more extensive building remains in Saint-Pierre. The original structure was a substantial colonial institution — multiple wards, courtyards, and outbuildings — and the 1902 eruption left the walls standing to a considerable height while destroying everything inside. Today the roofless rooms are overgrown, with trees growing up through the wards and bougainvillea covering sections of the stonework.

Unlike the theatre ruins, which are partly cleared and managed, the hospital ruins feel genuinely abandoned. They are accessible on foot from the town centre and are not fenced off. Walking through the remains of a ward, with iron bedframes rusted into the floor and the sky above where the ceiling once was, gives a strong impression of how complete and how final the destruction was. This is one of the larger ruin sites in town.
