Ruins of the Old Prison Quarter

The prison complex of the old city — of which the Cyparis dungeon is the most famous remnant — occupies the lower quarter of Saint-Pierre near the seafront. Beyond the individual cell, the surrounding ruins of the prison buildings are still visible: thick stone walls, narrow doorways, the foundations of what was a substantial colonial-era correctional facility. Weeds and small trees grow from the crumbling walls.

These ruins are not formally managed as a museum site, which gives them a raw quality that the more visited ruins in town sometimes lack. You can walk through freely. The scale of the original complex is surprising — it speaks to how significant a city Saint-Pierre was, a place large enough to require a serious jail. The combination of the Cyparis story and the physical presence of the stones makes this one of the more powerful sites in the town.
