Volcán Ceboruco

Active stratovolcano above Ahuacatlán, with crater walks and rugged lava scenery.

Volcán Ceboruco is the landscape that makes Ahuacatlán more than a pleasant plaza town. The active stratovolcano rises to about 2,280 metres and last erupted in the 19th century, leaving rough lava fields and a broad crater landscape above the valley.

Local guides can help with the route, and the summit area is best treated as a proper outdoor excursion rather than a casual stroll. On a clear day, the reward is not just the crater but the sense of looking back over the whole volcanic country of southern Nayarit.
