Chacchoben

Restored Maya archaeological zone in southern Quintana Roo, reachable from Chetumal and Costa Maya.

Chacchoben is one of the more rewarding Maya sites in southern Quintana Roo, with restored pyramids and platforms set in low jungle north of Chetumal. It lacks the scale and crowds of Chichén Itzá, which makes the visit feel more intimate: stairs, plazas, and red-stone traces appearing between trees and birdsong.

The site works well as a day trip from Chetumal, Bacalar, or the Costa Maya coast. Go with water, insect repellent, and enough time to walk the loop slowly. The shade helps, but the heat can still be heavy, and the best parts are the pauses where you let the forest close back around the masonry.
